Rural scene, metà XVIII secolo

Oil painting on canvas in a frame. This work is part of the landscape influenced by the manner of Philipp Peter Roos, a German-born German painter. It is a landscape with a shepherdess and animals by the river (sheep, goats, an ox and a dog). The figures occupy the first floor prevailing over the landscape according to the formal layout of the passages of rural life and rural subjects of the Roos. In the background on the left are typical architectural ruins of the Roman countryside in fantasy and on the right a rocky landscape. The good quality painting was probably made by a second-rank artist who imitates the ways of the Roos. In fact, the formal elements of the repertoire taken by his pupils can be found, in particular from Domenica Brandi known as Micco and his sons Gaetano del Rosa and Jacob known as Rosa da Napoli. Therefore, not only the children and students are dedicated to the theme of Roos, but also a large number of imitating painters who follow him in this production of pastoral scenes with animals on landscape backgrounds. A cartouche on the back dated 1939 has the entry: "Gereinight and restoration in Jahre 1939. 2. Mai durch akd Maler. Friedrich Buschbaum. Suchy Mlin. 512 Slovakay" (cleaned and restored in 1939). Conservation status: good, small impact damage in the upper center.
