The drawing, monogrammed C. H., is made on watermarked paper by Léon Berville, who ran the well-known family business from 1870 to 1895. It can be deduced that the painter made the drawing during these years. The stylistic proof is equally clear: the trait is easily ascribable to the painters of the Barbizon School, of which our Master could be defined as a late follower.
